Policy on Human Resource Development

At JINS, employees are called “creators.” We see our employees as an important resource that can bring about new innovations through creative ideas. JINS offers creators growth opportunities through training and learning on the job to facilitate organizational growth, establishing an environment where they can take responsibility for their own growth and continue studying autonomously. Creators are offered on-the-job training (OJT) as a foundation for human resource development and off-the-job training (Off-JT) to supplement their knowledge. For the growth of creators, JINS has been developing a framework for becoming professional creators as soon as possible by establishing a training system for input and a personnel system for evaluating output.

Training System

Training System

With the belief the people and the organization are the most important pillars of a company’s growth, we have established various training programs for all employees in stores and at the Head Office in accordance with job rank and individual career development.

Stores

The internal skill improvement training and certification system for all employees including associate and part-time employees enables employees to steadily acquire technical and other knowledge, along with skills in respect of eyeglasses and sales at each of four levels: “entry,” “basic,” “advanced,” and “expert.” Permanent full-time employees are required to become certified under this system, with the vast majority achieving the “expert” rank. We are making progress on having store directors obtain the “Retail Marketing (salesperson)” certification in order that they acquire the business skills required of store directors. Our goal is for all store directors to acquire this certification. Please refer to the Sustainability Data Book for details on certifications and training programs.

In addition, we provide training and support at stores tailored to the career steps of each employee.

・Training for New Hires
In addition to having new hires understand the company’s vision and develop an appropriate mindset, the training provides practical knowledge and skills related to eyeglasses sales for working in stores.

・Career Challenge System
This is a career development system for taking on the challenge of a new career within the company. Employees can apply for their desired position from a selection of several positions every six months. When transferring from a store to the Head Office, employees can work at the Head Office while keeping their career at the store for up to one year. Employees can gain knowledge and skills through OJT and Off-JT that cannot be developed in stores.

・Job Challenge System
This is a career development system for taking on the challenge of several job types within the company. Through their participation in individual project operations at the Head Office, employees can expand the scope of their work and broaden their experience while performing their main duties at their store.

・Career Training for Female Employees
We have outside experts provide career training for female employees. Participants review their career up to the present to organize their own strengths and values, along with thinking about a more flexible career by considering their future ideal from the perspectives of both work and personal life.

Head Office

JINS develops diversified training programs to strengthen the organization as a whole, improve the expertise of each department, and support the self-directed growth of individuals. We also provide new employee training for people newly joining the Head Office, compliance training and information security training to solidify the organization’s foundation, and skill development seminars and similar trainings with outside instructors from various fields. These are available to all employees, including associate employees. Please refer to the Sustainability Data Book for details on training programs.

Personnel Evaluation System

JINS believes that people and the organization are the most important pillars of a company’s growth. To enable all JINS employees to work with a high level of motivation, we have designed our personnel system so as to ensure that individuals who deliver good results are evaluated accurately regardless of their age, gender, nationality, etc. The scope of responsibilities and the roles of each grade are presented visually. Every six months, employees are evaluated based on individual performance (performance evaluation) and conformance to our values called "Attitude" to which the company attaches importance (behavior evaluation), with the evaluation results reflected in bonus payments*. Employee progress is monitored through one-on-one meetings with their supervisor during the year, with a final evaluation conducted at the end of the year. Employees have a feedback meeting with their supervisor based on the final evaluation results to promote their further growth, while ensuring transparency and fairness in evaluations.
*Full-time permanent employees have both performance and behavior evaluations, while associate and part-time employees (only those working a certain number of hours or more) only have performance evaluations.

Global Career Challenge Program

JINS offers opportunities for its employees to work at overseas subsidiaries for six months as part of its Global Career Challenge Program to foster a global perspective. Through on-the-job training overseas, the employees are able to acquire practical skills and expand their careers. After returning to Japan, they can return to their original positions, allowing them to try working overseas with peace of mind.

Magnify Life Session

JINS holds a series of sessions called Magnify Life Session to encourage growth of its employees. To hold these sessions, experts and leaders who are active on the front lines of each industry are invited to provide with our employees learning opportunities and insights through special dialogues that deepen knowledge and perspectives to pave the way for the future. By sharing the latest trends and issues, as well as knowledge from across industries, we explore tips for accelerating individual and organizational growth. Based on our vision of enriching lives of people, we provide opportunities for each employee to discover new possibilities.

Establishment of “JINS Academy,” an In-House Educational Institution Aimed at Assisting Employees in Obtaining a National Skill Test & License

JINS has established JINS Academy, an in-house educational institution aimed at assisting employees in obtaining a national skill test & license. Our aim is that within the next few years, 500 employees obtain “Optician*,”Japan’s only qualification for eyeglasses, which was newly established in 2022. All JINS employees who have been employed for at least two years at the time of taking the written exam for the national skill test & license and who have passed the in-house skill examination are eligible to take the course, including associate and part-time employees. The goal is that employees are licensed through e-learning, academic training, and classes for the practical skills exam.
In addition, for employees who have already acquired advanced skills and knowledge, such as trainers in charge of employee education within JINS and holders of “JINS Meister,” an in-house proficiency certification awarded only to employees with excellent skills, we provide financial support to cover the complete cost of enrolling in a correspondence course at an external optometry school. Completion of an correspondence course at an optometry school exempts students from the written exam for the national skill test & license, so we see the course as a reliable way of supporting examinees in acquiring the license.
*A national skill test & license as a comprehensive expert in eyeglass making, providing optimal recommendations, sales, and care to customers.

Obtaining Universal Manners Certification

Aiming to learn how to interact with older and disabled persons appropriately and with the right mindset, JINS provided its employees an opportunity to obtain the Universal Manners certification. The Universal Manners have been set out by the Japan Universal Manners Association based in the city of Osaka (Representative Director: Toshiya Kakiuchi). The concept behind these manners is to show consideration to those different from oneself, as well as supporting people in a more unobtrusive manner based on a proper understanding of the circumstances. With its aim to create stores where everyone can enjoy a more comfortable and pleasant shopping experience and to spread the idea of these manners widely across stores and among employees, JINS held an official workshop to obtain the Universal Manners certification at its Tokyo Head Office in 2019, and 85 employees obtained the grade 3.

Measures to Instill Vision Among Employees

JINS is taking various measures to ensure that its vision of "Magnify Life" is communicated to and fully understood by each and every employee. In promoting an environment where employees are always aware of JINS’ vision, we implement KEKKIKAI, a kickoff party, brand training upon joining the company, as well as lectures by external experts for internal use, and more. We hold KEKKIKAI every year at the beginning of the fiscal year, aiming to align all employees towards common goals and accelerate the achievement of these goals. Additionally, KEKKIKAI contributes to motivating employees through award ceremonies recognizing those with outstanding achievements.
