Sponsoring the Myopia Prevention Forum

The number of people with myopia is increasing worldwide, with a marked rise seen particularly in Asian countries and regions such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea. In Japan, too, an epidemiological study on myopia conducted in 2019 by the myopia research team at the Department of Ophthalmology, Keio University School of Medicine targeting approximately 700 elementary and 700 junior high school students in Tokyo reported that 76.5% of elementary school students and 94.9% of junior high school students were nearsighted. In addition, it was also reported that among 90% of the junior high school students, approximately 10% had already developed severe myopia*. On the other hand, we have become more aware in recent years of preventive measures that can be adopted in daily life, with an awareness that “children who spend a lot of time playing outdoors are less likely to develop myopia” and that “sunlight is effective in preventing myopia”, and consequently, there is a growing need to reconsider the environments in which children are growing up.

In light of this situation, the “Myopia Prevention Forum” (https://myopia-prevention.jp) was established in June 2020 with the aims of offering support, disseminating information, and raising awareness to provide society at large with a correct understanding of myopia and knowledge that will lead to halting the progression of myopia from childhood and school age to adolescence and adulthood. JINS endorses the purpose of the “Myopia Prevention Forum” and has been a co-sponsor since its establishment.

Donated “JINS Protect” to Support Cataract Surgeries in Vietnam

JINS endorses the activities of “Fight for Vision,” an NPO that assists with medical treatment to help people around the world in danger of losing their sight, and has been making donations to the organization. In December 2022, we donated “JINS PROTECT” products (anti-pollen and anti-dryness eyeglasses) to accompany free cataract surgery in Vietnam, while in December 2023, we donated another 200 “JINS PROTECT” products.
It is believed that about 500,000 people lose their sight each year in Vietnam due to not having access to cataract surgery*. There is a limit to the number of patients that can be helped by dispatching doctors from Japan. In addition, material support is required in order to allow cataract surgeries to be performed locally on a continual basis. In response to a request from Dr. Fujishima, the chairperson of Fight for Vision and the person responsible for initiating these activities, JINS donated “JINS PROTECT” products to help protect patients’ eyes after surgery.
JINS will continue to take on various new challenges in the area of healthcare, which is closely related to eyewear, in order to deliver surprise and joy to people around the world through “vision.”
